Reading corner is a rich book collection area in a public reception or waiting area which creates an environment for children and families to enjoy reading when they wait for a few hours or so. There are public and private reading corners, the children can read aloud and spend quality time with books.

I am glue stuck to reading books, where I have a reading corner of my design at home. The benefits of reading transformed me on the whole and shaped me into what I am today.

Reading corner increases children’s access to books and creates an inviting ambiance for families also to support them in reading books daily. It also strengthens the family relationship and fosters the love of reading. Downtrodden families are deprived of children’s books in their homes, and have a setback in literary skill development. It is a comfortable space in classrooms to store books, any reading material, books, and children's writings.

A home reading corner is a typical library created at our home comfortable with a planned spacing, and proper shelves or racks illuminated with lights making it a cozy room for all to read. Children and adults too love to read in such a room.

Benefits of Reading

 

Reading is a very good hobby which develops the reading skills in children especially, even if they have to read more for their exams from a study point of view by improving their concentration and focus. It increases their general knowledge especially if it is a newspaper. It improves literacy, urging children as well as adults to go beyond the limit and learn their subjects. It reduces stress levels and induces good sleep in an individual.

 It is a motivational habit that puts any great and eminent scholars’ quotes or phrases deep into our minds and brings a sense of determination to the choice of any particular decision in their life path. For instance, many people have given up drinking, and taking drugs, left bad food and eating habits, learned good qualities of a human being, been empathetic, uplifted socially downtrodden people, encourage widow remarriages, considered bad hapless prostitutes and transgenders and forsaken many evil social stigmas.   

 

Dynamic Use of Reading habit

It lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s disease(Memory loss) in adults. It exposes an individual to new ideas, new concepts, and information. It brings in the inner happiness of visiting a new place or country, especially travelogues and helps them to keep connected with people who have shared their experiences. It helps one to learn about new cultures, traditions, history, and day-to-day life activities of other country people and helps to create awareness about their lives. It improves one’s verbal skills and helps in mastering the vocabulary thereby making him or her learn new words and making their conversation rich in the literary form of a language. It reduces the rate of cognitive decline in older adults and can improve their thinking and logical reasoning making them alert

in all places. It improves the brain health of people who read books. Last, but not least it has inspired many people to become an author.

The Outlook of Reading Corner at St. Britto’s

 

At St. Britto’s, various activities have been introduced under the Reading Corner category where, in the spacious library,  lots of books are kept for the students to read and relax. Also, posters, pamphlets, brochures, newspaper clippings, and advertisements are kept separately for their reading and also to know what each item means.

The reading corner not only improves the habit of reading but also helps to improve their spelling, write according to the grammar rules, and to learn the correct pronunciation of words. It helps students to gain confidence in reading aloud without fear of saying it wrongly and to learn subjects of their interest thereby promoting a knowledge-driven community.

 

Also, the students learn the skill of maintenance things which are important to all of us, and also stewardship. It improves memory, critical thinking skills, concentration, and memory power, removes distractions, aids in gaining knowledge makes them intelligent, and makes them smarter decisions in their studies.

It is a part of Library Science that deals with perspectives, practices, and tools of management. The school libraries help in sustaining the habit of reading for pleasure, enriching students’ intellectual, cultural, aesthetic, and emotional growth.

The TOI(Times of India) team is a non-profit organization empowering young minds and engaging people from different sectors to build awareness of the importance of reading, and collecting books from schools, corporate, and individuals.

Volunteers from different educational institutions, and universities help in shaping and forming libraries to help children to learn on their own.

At the outset, books are treasures of innocence that give relief from the daily routine of studies, making children think outside of the box, with imagination, and creativity and creating a sense of independence. Books of different flavors (science, art, quiz, puzzle, storybooks) make children indulge in reading habits.

Reading always improves cognitive and critical thinking which was shared by the teachers. It made me feel the real insight in the students after being repeatedly insisted on gives me the great pleasure of achievement.

Hi, I am Sai Saranya, doing my B. Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at B. S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and technology.  I am a former student of St.Britto’s MHSS, where the school environment was so dynamic that it shaped my career in a good way. Earlier, I disliked reading books but at St.Britto’s MHSS, I slowly started to develop reading during the library period. When other students find reading books boring, as they stick on to only the classroom content and certain reference books, this extensive reading habit has gained a good name for my friends and me.
