Medical Camps - Aesculap - Tent

As Hippocrates says, “Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity”

Health care is the basic right for every human being born in this world, and should be available for all and is not a commodity which can be met by people who can afford money to get the services. Medical camps bridge the distance between the patients and the quality of health care offered, by making diagnostic tests accessible.

“Health is wealth” - as the adage goes, I instruct both the students and the teaching faculty to stay fit. In par with this, medical camps are often organized in schools and in the villages adopted to seek a foundation for the benefit of society.

Medical Camps also give a venue for educating the public about health problems, precautions, and protection about already existing diseases and the ones coming into the limelight now. High school teens are also asked to role-play the doctors about first aid during an emergency, CPR techniques, broken bones, etc., and also practice hospital skills with the help of medical professionals.

“The greatest medicine of all is teaching people how not to need it. It is no coincidence that four of the six letters in health are HEAL”                                                              - Ed Northstrum

Medical Camps are conducted by Doctors and health professionals to carry out certain health check-ups for underprivileged people. Poor people attend to get free check-ups and treatment. But, nowadays people belonging to the middle class and upper middle class use these opportunities because of the high soaring amount to be spent. Medical Camps consider factors like age, lifestyle, heredity issues and people who are susceptible to (high risk). Examining health with diagnostic tests at an early stage of illness helps to cure the disease fast and save a life. The basic check-up offered can identify the underlying illness. So, if a person gets the right kind of health check-up, screening and treatment, the longitivity of life can be prolonged and healthy life can be led.

Free Medical Camps are for people with low income who can’t afford to seek medical services extended by hospitals they are set to bring awareness about diseases, discomforts and healthcare services to be taken. These camps ensure that people are getting health care services at the right time and consulting doctors early before getting serious. Free Medical Camps is a life-saving programme which aims to provide free medical and surgical services to poor people in rural and urban areas with a mobile team offering different special medical services. Benefiting people get free check-ups and medicines. They tell the truth about the disease and all the patients are treated similarly. The Medical Camps include a physical examination of external organs like eyes, ears, nose, and teeth and also assess the vital organs like heart, lungs, liver, kidney, digestive system etc.,

Objectives of Medical Camps

The following are the main objectives of starting medical camps:

Provide free and good quality medical service for the poor. Raising health awareness about different types of diseases and basic knowledge of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Register and refer severe and special cases for further investigation to specialized centres and hospitals. Having a medical team in places of emergency like floods, fire or any disasters. Also, evaluating their living conditions, and challenges encountered and working to solve the problems.

Medical Camps in schools

To impart knowledge about health education, exercise, and weight check-up is done at schools to ensure the health of students and shift their focus to learning all about it. At Britto’s, we educate the students right from their admission to have the habit of health checks for early diagnosis and prevention of any diseases.

We also educate the students to be more healthy and provide awareness to live a healthy lifestyle and keep it sustaining. We also maintain health record data to retrieve relevant information necessary with our School Health Camp (SHC) - a web-based health record management is to be created, to store information about students’ health. As a future project, breastfeeding moms are also to be included in medical camps to educate them to take care of their health by taking nutritious food.

At St.Britto’s students have volunteered for a few private organizations along with the camp volunteers. ‘Doggie run’ was organised by class XI and XII students as a part of a community outreach programme to create awareness and to join in School Health Camp which will attract dog owners and lovers to come to know about the requirements to organize a medical camp.

As a part of extending their contribution beyond, they have teamed with NGOs for free medical camps and also conduct a rally on awareness about diseases in general and the steps to be taken. Every three months, camps in various schools started to concentrate on health issues related to the eye and teeth.

To raise awareness about obesity, a common problem recognized among students due to unhealthy eating habits, a BMI (Body Mass Index) programme is brought in to check the weight every two to three months. By this, the weight check can be regularized. Students visit all the classes and have to interact about general health and give health tips through PowerPoint presentations. Medical professionals are driven by strong ethics of medicine and firmly believe in taking up moral responsibility to treat patients regardless of their income, social status and race. Through medical camps, the doctors and medical professionals reflect the goal and strength of medical ethics confidently.

Future Medical Camps

Medical Camps are purely for serving humanity by taking care of children, women, adults, and old people who are downtrodden. Free medical camps are the biggest hope or saviour for people who are left abandoned by hospitals and clinics, to die of disease, trauma or any health issues. Medical Camps should be targeted to restore health in rural and urban areas. The skyrocketing cost of the healthcare system makes it a failure and the poor are deprived of it. The United Nations Organization must take necessary steps and measures to cut down the costs of medical and healthcare services all over the world so that people from all walks of life can be benefited in their lives.

I am happy to know that many people are benefiting from the downtrodden society who are helpless by attending the camp. The students have a great urge to conduct at the required place every three months which might trigger the ambition of entering the medical field.

Testimonial

Hi, I am Afsar Jumail a student at Chennai institute of technology doing Artificial intelligence. As a student of St. Britto’s MHSS, I have been a volunteer to organize the students with the help of our school teachers and management to be taken up for health checks related to teeth, eyes and skin in the medical camp. In the camp, I learnt how systematically the process goes with a lot of patience from the doctors, answering the queries and doing the needful to them. So, now in my work spot, I take the pleasure of organizing camps not only for the employees but also for their families regularly showing my concern towards the subordinates - a value learnt from my school. When children of the employees come, I give more importance to having eye and teeth health checks which are ignored and dealt with carelessly. It was during my school days that I learnt about this service to mankind for which I am grateful to my school and the entire team.
