The Emancipation

On this day, the memories of freedom fighters, their struggles and sacrifices are reminded.  The communal harmony, hard-earned freedom and its value should be exposed to the future generation. India’s Independence Day is celebrated on the 15th of August to commemorate the nation’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1947 after 200 years of struggle.
The Constitution protects the rights of the students at the school level. But, students should know their rights and check that the school treats everyone equal.

Independence Day according to me means wholesome freedom not only to a normal fit person but also to a physically challenged person, in general. The right at school includes speech rights, and not to refrain disabled students from academic disciplines, field trips, and extracurricular activities etc., Hence, the outlook of Independence must benefit people of all categories.

“Let freedom reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement.” – Nelson Mandela.

“Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” – Jawaharlal Nehru.

At St.Britto’s the students learn the value of celebrating Independence Day by participating in various events like fancy dress competitions, reciting prominent slogans and patriotic songs and hosting the life history of patriotic leaders. The scouts and guides were entrusted with March past and putting up the national flag.

The students learnt the importance of Independence Day as it marked the end of British rule and the emergence of a free and independent India. These events were held to promote the fervour of patriotism, nationalism, and the bloodshed of freedom fighters.

The value of Independence Day lies in fostering a self-sufficient feeling and self-reliant attitude to create a fulfilled life with contentment in an individual. The students of St.Britto’s learnt to be loyal, stay with integrity, possess selflessness, develop courage, be tolerant, deterministic and trustworthy, set an example for altruism and fight against injustice in the world.

Life lessons from freedom fighters for children are, to maintain steadfastness, action-orientation,  developing communication skills, power of teamwork, an open mind to accept team building to take a firm decision, philosophical fighting for what was rightfully their own, determination, being self-realistic, possess sacrifices and they should develop a mature-belief system.

“Nothing is more precious than independence and liberty”

-  Ho Chi Minh

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed”         – Martin Luther King Jr.

Freedom is hard to get but once obtained, we must try to preserve, cherish and build a better nation with unity and understanding towards each other and also develop a sense of belonging that can bring peace and stability.

At St. Britto’s as part of the Independence Day programme, a drama was enacted by portraying the character of Rani Velu Naachiyar through one among the team of students with scenes showing East India Company interacting with Velu Naachiyar. The drama was staged to bring a sense of bravery and courage to be in the minds of students.

Also, the life history of Bhagat Singh who was executed for bombing the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi was the role played by one of the students of St. Britto’s.

I fervently advocate the importance of the Independence of our country and the values learnt by the students were to fight for justice and against oppression despite great adversity, possible to achieve victory is what I wanted them to continue.

PAUL PUVENDRAN P

I’m Paul Poovendran, doing my B. Com at Hindustan College of Arts and Science and a former student of St.Britto’s. I have been regularly participating in all the events at our school and I vividly recollect one such programme, the Independence Day celebration. Now - a - days the feeling of patriotism is deteriorating, so we as a team from college hosted an event in some of the nearby schools to depict the life history of freedom fighters and their struggle to glorify their hard work. I have a strong feeling to fight against injustice and determination to achieve it by standing for the people deprived of it with the “Race forward” organisation. I also have determined to serve as a tool to bring peace and serve the nation by joining the armed forces and have a sense of satisfaction to be an Indian.
