LEADERS ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, become more, you are a leader”     - John Quincy Adams

This one person holds the torchlight for the others to follow them, go down and become a worker again, inspire others, a to-be-learnt real-world example not only in the commercial field but also in every agricultural, educational, technological, political, economic and trivial industries and fields, moving across continents, tirelessly letting know others of the possibility to succeed - yes, we have to know more about the leaders, their roles and responsibilities.

As an Educator, I feel that I inspire many through my leadership qualities. In Britto’s, I see to it that every student, at least once own’s the leadership associated with the school which builds self-confidence in them.

“True leadership lies in guiding others to success - in ensuring that everyone is performing at their best, doing the work they are pledged to do and doing it well”                 - Bill Owens

“Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily, even if you had no title or position”             -  Brian Tracy

People like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and Warren Buffet with their determination, vision, and persistent hard work led their companies to greater heights and with their strong leadership qualities, they ventured into a new dimension in the world of business.

A leader should possess the following qualities to execute his / her role and perform the responsibilities effectively and fruitfully.

Integrity, innovation, honesty, being a good listener, self-confident, a visionary, a strong communicator, delegation, problem-solving and decision-making ability, empathy, fair attitude, humility, self-discipline, passion, resilience, support, accountability, being tech-savvy, with empowerment, and learning agility.

No leader can own all leadership qualities, it is one’s consistent effort and dedicated spirit that paves the path to go forward for sustainable growth.

Forbes Magazine views that “leaders must motivate, instruct, discipline the people they are in charge of.” They should encourage their subordinates, know conflict management, mentoring and discipline the employees.

Responsibilities of a good and effective leader

A good and responsible leader gives care for the health, safety and welfare of the people.

They set clear objectives and goals to make the concern or establishment or institution flourish in the best manner.

“As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others”                         - Bill Gates

Leaders know how to define reality. They take the initiatives to develop their establishment with confidence and share new ideas, encourage others to do the same and are open to implementing any innovations too. For instance, in the field of education, they act as a bridge between students and management. Should voice out the expectation and interest of the fellow mates to the teachers. Motivate, guide encourage by giving any awards, to know the strength, potential, uniqueness and channelize the work to be done, should be a good delegator in assigning and getting the students hooked by the leader's values, actions and attitude.

How does a leader show responsibility?

By responding to the situations both professionally and maturely in times of crisis. They must be able to complete and show good performance in the task given.

“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say “Thank You” in between the leader is a servant”

                                - Unknown Author

Role of a school leader

School leaders, have to be supported by teachers and other staff for better development. They empower teachers and cultivate leadership skills. They are passionate about their work because it is not only the cause for which one is working but considers the effort of other people involved in it. The most important sustainable quality of a school leader is an insatiable thirst to learn or the craving for gaining knowledge, very curious to learn and question every fact delivered to them.

To be engaged, accountable, and communicate with clarity to the students for effective work collaboration and execution all count to be as exemplary quality. Of course, we have a very influential leader, Malala Yousafzai, a transforming, charismatic, humble, supportive, courageous, compassionate student who stood for the right to education for every girl child, never giving up her focus, goal and vision. She has significantly affected the young minds of girls to access education and still advocating for it despite death threats.

“Every girl child should be educated and woman having the equal right and who wants peace in every corner of the world.

One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world”                                          - Malala Yousafzai

Do’s and Don't s of leadership skills.

A good leader must care,  effectively guide and equip the team with all the needed skill sets. He must possess qualities with values to lead the team in the best manner. He should be full of vigour and zeal to create his team members with the required qualification and develop themselves so that they reach their goals. He must assist his team members in times of crisis and help one another so that they do not have the thought of being forsaken. A good leader must show sympathy, empower them and must walk along with them and make them feel the same.

“A good leader is a person who takes a little more than his share of the blame and a little less than his share of the credit”

- John.C.Maxwell

On the other hand, an ineffective and worthless leader will try to dominate fellow students, showing fear, trying to blame them entirely for any pitfalls in the job assigned or the flawed output and not being an empathetic person on the whole. These are some instances where a not- so- a- leader tries to bring everything under his feet and also create a similar offspring of his behaviour among the other students.

The challenge of leadership

Is to be strong, but not rude;

Be kind, but not weak;

Be bold, but not bully, be thoughtful, but not lazy;

Be humble, but not timid;

Be proud, but not arrogant;

Have humour, but without folly.                  - Jim Rohn

At Britto’s, electing leaders and officially acknowledging them in the Investiture ceremony by giving them certain responsibilities inculcates a sense of responsibility among them. This also makes them the best leader in each of their area of work. This kind of moulding especially helps when they make an entry into their respective colleges and universities to pursue their education. This in turn helps them to gain a good name in their work spot and makes them good team players.

Future leaders of the Nation

A person who can lead in the forefront must be a capable, alert person with good communication skills to make a clear thought and express it carefully to his subordinates so that the thought process can be executed properly.
A good leader must be a good laborer. Without keeping the base strong it is difficult to strengthen and build one’s organization in the best manner. The future leaders of our country must have sound knowledge of the happenings of the surroundings encompassing all spheres of life.

I am awe-struck to see that many students, have built confidence and stepped to take up leadership and shine in their profession after they completed schooling at St.Britto’s.

Testimonial

I am Shiva Surya, a commerce graduate and a former student of St.Britto’s MHSS, happy to present my interesting days at school. When I was in grade 11, I was given the responsibility of Sports Captain. I was always interested in sports and hence this position made me to think of the challenges I have to face in front of me. I did my work with care and determination, making more students to get involved in any form of sport so that they can be energetic and develop a love for it.

The challenge of leadership made me to be strong, but not rude and weak. It made me bold, thoughtful and active; I turned to be humble and a very concerned person among my friends and even at college, all of which were possible as I was given a responsibility. At college, I am the Secretary of the Sports Club, organising various events along with my fellow students bringing out the importance of sports and related activities. So, I would like to urge others to think of leadership as an important quality of an individual to know his or her responsibility and come up in life.
