Appreciation stands for recognizing and celebrating oneself for his / her achievements. In the classroom, it carries positive praise; the action you want in the class/expectation, reinforcing the behaviour. It needs to be regularly updated to appreciate all the good qualities of a student or more than one outstanding student. This can be commonly seen informally in the school corridors where a student is appreciated or congratulated for his or her action or any unique quality at school.
At Britto’s, it is mandatory that an appreciation board has to be kept in classrooms, and corridors to bring the best work of the students and teachers into the limelight and bring more people into it has been a push as a head of the institution by me.
“Every student has special talents. It is our duty and privilege to find these talents and to adapt our lessons to best implement them” - Robert John Meehan
“A teacher’s purpose is not to create students in his image, but to develop students who can create their image”
The appreciation board is to bring one’s effort into the limelight for all to see, motivate fellow students to make them bring their hidden talents, and brings positivity among students. The doer is happy, encouraging, making to go miles, there is a sense of contentment, it makes others know their worth and make them follow for families too. It is an effort that is taken to motivate the students to step forward and feel elated to see their traits put up for others to appreciate or reward. Once the student has experienced excellence, he/she will never be contented with mediocrity.
It is one way to build a culture of recognition, to appreciate dedication and hard work. The appreciation board creates a friendly and supportive environment for the students. Effective praise can benefit the student by improving academic excellence. It also ensures the feeling of how much they are valued and that they can still do their best. An appreciation board can be erected/done for the following topics:
Volunteers work (cycle stand duty, lunchtime, interval)
Thematic days
Inter house competition winners board
Teachers appreciation week
School, subject topper
Parents appreciation board
Eminent personality appreciation board
Successful students
Individual talent appreciation board
Cheers to our peers
Appreciation - Why?
To improve productivity, when the work of a student/teacher is elated they feel they are valued, recognized and keep their well-being so that, it can make a difference. True appreciation is ongoing and is not for a day. When appreciation he/she tries to duplicate to the next person on the same road the giver and receiver both are incredibly happy.
“Appreciation is a wonderful thing; It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well” Voltaire
If continuous appreciation is given for the student/teacher it goes for increased efficiency and innovation of the work also based on improved academic, and extracurricular excellence.
“A person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected”
“Don’t forget, a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated”
- H. Jackson Brown
At Britto’s, we raise all our children to an appreciation of others throughout the life of a child’s education, the child should never fail to notice the effort and reward at right time from early stage. The primary teachers have tuned the children with simple rewards like praising verbally with phrases for the fellow students in classroom. Even providing privilege like choosing a game, activity, naming an event are also given to them. This attitude is persuaded always and is checked often so that, it does not lose its flavour.
How should an appreciation be?
It should be real and not fake; it is
necessary to make it frequent, timely, and specific. Oprah Winfrey, an American
talk show host once said “I ‘ve talked to 30,000 people in my show, and all had
one thing common in their mind - validation. Likewise, the children also need
to have positive thoughts and reaffirm themselves.
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them” - John.F.Kennedy
Appreciation in school by teachers
The teacher's award and reward (giving points on a chart) for the students work in academics or any extracurricular activities is providing at the end - a certificate. Saying phrases, clapping hands encourage the students who have achieved well. Recognition for their work in academics or extracurricular work is given by proper appreciation representing them as role models in the classroom. Making to read aloud one’s fellow student’s views on any general happenings in the class just like a suggestion enhances their self-esteem.
So the outcome is the change in students’ classroom behaviour with increased concentration, doing homework as part of proper routine work, exploring new things, believe themselves, coming back from failure and any difficult situation with their whole-hearted effort not in vain, a spirit that does not give up, go beyond the limit, open to new challenges, a case of one student motivating the other are some examples where one can get appreciated for their various activities in school.
“I would like to say thanks in advance for the massive, stupendous amount of precious youngster thinking energy that is going to be invested by learners this year in the face of non-routine puzzling challenges and lots of productive struggle” - Andrew Coulson, Chief Data Science Officer at Mind Research Institute.
“Education is the process in which we discover that learning adds quality to our lives. Learning must be experienced”
- William Glasser
I am happy that this habit of appreciating the right person has been followed by the students in their work spot where it can make the organization grow and make people happy. As an entrepreneur, it has been of immense help to carry this value of appreciating attitude from school life by our students, which fills me with happiness.
Testimonial
I am Tamil Selvan, a student of St. Britto’s MHSS a pass-out of 2021-2022 aspiring for the prestigious medical course and currently making myself a hardworking person to write the NEET exam. All through these years, my years of study in St. Britto’s MHSS have been a memorable one in my life of the appreciation I received from everyone as a disciplined, meritorious student eagerly involved in various extra-curricular activities, events and programmes of the school right from primary education up to the higher secondary education which I completed now.
All these were possible due to the appreciation I received in the school which made me bolder, strong and enthusiastic enough to participate in all events that were conducted time and now. I am thankful to God for such an appreciation I received in my school which has created a positive vibe in me, pushing forward to step forward in achieving the focus of what I want.
