It is an exhibition space for the display and sale of artworks. The purpose is to visit to enjoy art without purchasing it and to bring the students’ artwork in any form into the limelight, for instance, painting, drawing, handwork, and craftwork can be displayed. It gives a good ambience i.e. environment for inspiring, learning, meeting friends, reflection on art, and so on.
“The whole world is an art gallery when you are mindful. There are beautiful things everywhere and they are free.” - Charles Tart
How do students connect with thought through art making?
I strongly believe that art form of education at every stage for children is an integral part of visual learning. Some people are born with talents, some acquire them. So, in our institution we wanted the potential of all the students to be tapped up in their way. One such was bringing the artist in them.
Why display children’s artwork?
To motivate, cultivate a sense of community, and feel happy about their creations a display of artwork is essential. It allows them to think about the past and make plans for the future. It changes the classroom atmosphere, by making it a collaborative community and gives a positive impact on their self-esteem. Teachers and parents come to know about the creativity of the child when the students know that everyone is putting up their work. The peer attitude becomes more supportive and less competitive. When the students’ artistic work is put into public viewing they feel elated and it’s empowering others too.
“A man paints with his brains and not with his hands.” - Michael Angels
“Great art picks up where nature ends.” - Marc Chagall
For students with low self-esteem working with a peer, makes them boosts their academic and artistic confidence. Initially, when one / two students come for displaying the artwork, the others will also be inclined to do the same work or better than them, thus bringing many students into form.
This might have a profound influence on the students for years to come by displaying the artwork as and when the teacher gets to know about the student's skills. Students need to practice writing about each artwork, which provides a framework for them to organize their work and consistently practice writing.
How are children benefited by Art Gallery?
It widens their horizons, kindles curiosity and inquisitiveness, boosts creativity, and craftsmanship, fosters storytelling, and stimulates children’s imagination. Apart from making the students know valuable learning experience, they get knowledge in all spheres of life.
Taking students to art gallery help them engage people in arts and communication and see the value of creative works.
It helps to get involved and explore their creativity.
They get the necessary resources and programs for educational groups which foster artwork.
Inspired by interactive zones, the students can learn and create from the environment around them. It also helps in their personal development and to build a great sense of historical and personal identity.
It improves one’s memory because we give more exposure to vibrant informations.
Making school art gallery (collection can be paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, sketchbooks). Maintaining and establishing a school art gallery is to develop knowledge, skill, understanding, and appreciation of art with a sense of ownership and pride.
The pupil can maintain, develop and take a decision on art making. There are no rules, apart from art, it is really fun. By collecting, researching, storing, and exhibiting artwork with the theme, story, and real incident, students can make direct, meaningful real-world links to learning across the curriculum
At St. Britto’s the students are given activities related to the artwork. Individual students and classes are allotted different tasks and responsibilities for collecting, maintaining, and cataloging the artwork. Online art gallery exhibition/collection, which can highlight the artwork and also be reviewed every month is also facilitated at school.
Using an interactive website, the students are allowed to recreate the famous paintings and post them on social media for everyone to admire their creativity.
“You cannot take an Amazon approach to contemporary art, because it does not protect the artist or the value .” - Jose Freire
Putting an exhibition in a designated space in school can be put on with any celebration of children’s work, showcasing the works of guest artists from any clubs or art schools inclusive of retrospective work of past students, etc. So, Stewardship (looking after the collection) entrusted to students is to be carefully stored and maintained.
The students are asked to create a mini portfolio of five artworks, “warm-up artwork” like art prompts given to explore conceptual thinking, interpreting research, and responding of their own choice.
What did students learn from the art gallery?
The students discover the artist in him/her and learn the various styles of artwork for example learning Madhubani, Meenakari, Tanjore, and Rajasthani art forms in the painting. How to see and approach an object is an essential tool to understand any kind of art form. The art of presentation and learning to write information and captions through artwork is very important for a student aspiring to become an artist.
Testimonial from our Student
Hi, I am Santhosh Vijay, doing my B.E EEE at SRM Easwari Engineering College. I have the privilege of studying at
St. Britto’s MHSS, where there are equal opportunities for all to excel in every aspect of school education like extracurricular activities. This has helped me a lot in my college education where in this field of engineering, design work is involved and creativity comes first hand to give the output a perfect finish which has won me accolades during project works which have helped me to gain an edge over the others.
I owe this to my teachers who shaped us well in the school atmosphere. Thank you.
“The artist’s intention must come through the work, Art must have some element of the emotional, it should be moving.” - Dina Mitrani
I am delighted to know that wonderful craftsmanship is there in every student where each one has explored their creativity. So, the students came out with conducting an art gallery in school to make others realize the importance of work and the value of taking responsibility through collaborative work.
